Your Guide To Great Health & Better Living

What are you drinking this summer?

When you are a wilted commuter and the driveway seem to reach a melting point, reaching for a tall glass of cola or a pint of beer is our natural flair. What we don’t know is in the process, we are disturbing the natural hydration level of our body by causing it harm- manifold.

Cola contains sugar, caffeine, aspartame and ethylene glycol- all of which if consumed daily causes harm to your body. To top, cola also has a very low level of PH (3.5) which renders it extremely acidic- a quantity, strong enough to dissolve bones and teeth, overtime. On the other hand, beer or any alcoholic beverage for that matter, however intuitive it maybe, dehydrates your body by inhibiting ADH release from your brain- a hormone responsible for the kidneys to hold water.

Feel like you’ve chosen wrong options, all along? Go cold turkey on it and keep this handy list of quick stir-ups- a bank of refreshing alternatives to shop bought drinks for summer.

Fresh Melon Quenchers: Roughly chop about 3 cups of cantaloupe, honeydew and watermelon.  Add an inch of ginger, shredded. Pour about half a cup of ice in the blender, pour all the other ingredients and give it a quick presto. Serve with lemon rinds and/or sparkling water.

Tender coconut water: Considered as the “fluid of life”, it contains a bounty of nutrients to help battle summer.

Fruit smoothies: This should be your go-to quencher this summer. Put fruits of your choice, ice, milk/yogurt in a blender and there we said it!

June Bug: Not buggy at all, this drink combines ginger ale, grenadine, orange juice and sparkling water to a tasteful mix. Can be had in May too.

Spiced Buttermilk: A natural coolant, spiced buttermilk is a classic. Tangy and salty, this is for people with an aversion to sweet drinks.

Cucumber-Lemonade Chiller: Rosemary, cucumbers, and lemons come together to concoct this lemonade that will keep you cool on a hot day.

Blended cooler punch: Think of all the citrus fruit you can, crush it with sugar, mint and lime juice and top with club soda. A refreshing drink you’d come back for more.

Hot summer days beg for cool drinks. Fluids that are not only cool to taste but to our body too. Shift your habits in choosing your quencher and you might be able to actually keep it cool during the scorching summers
